The celebration here in Lithuania starts on the night before Christmas day. We have a traditional Christmas Eve dinner around 7-8 pm on the 24 of December. According to old traditions the dinner should start when the first star appears in the sky (waiting for the star to appear in the sky symbolizes the Star of Bethlehem leading the shepherds to Bethlehem).
The meal is a family occasion, probably the main gathering of the family of the year, which includes many traditions of both pagan and Christian origin. The table is prepared is a special way. Twelve dishes with no meet or dairy products are prepared. A handful of fine hay is spread evenly on the table which is a reminder that Jesus was born in a stable and laid in a manger on hay. The table is then covered with a pure white linen tablecloth. An empty place is left at the table (with a small plate) for the member of the family who died that year. It is believed, that the spirit of the deceased family member participates in the festive dinner.
Many families attend midnight mass in the church after the dinner. The evening is filled with many rituals and traditions for either predicting the future or assuring success in the year to come. Won’t bother you with this part, will only say one ritual I make: you have to write down the names of the people you like (of the opposite sex) on the little sheets of paper and put them under your pillow before you go to sleep. On Christmas morning, just after you open your eyes, take one paper out – the name of the person written is the one you love/will fall in love. Believe me, it works - I get the same name for the last 5 years
On Christmas morning the kids (those, who are 27 year old as well
) run to see what presents Santa left under Christmas tree...and so the celebration starts: family/friend visits, vining and dining, exchanging gifts...
Nowadays for many people (including me) it has very little to do with religion (the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ), it’s rather the time to draw family members closer and to strengthen family ties. Those few days are very special to me and if not one person I always deadly miss around that time, it would be my fav time of the year
