Mark William-Washington, owner of LaMarck Films, is currently producing a new documentary about Tupac, heres a recent interview he did
Your bio says you’re working on a project about your marriage, a documentary about Tupac Shakur and a documentary about reality TV. Are you really working on three film projects at once?
Yes. It gets a little crazy sometimes. Everybody tells me, why don’t you do one thing at a time? I don’t know if that’s possible for creative people.
We have a team. Having a team definitely helps when you have the tendency to be a scatterbrain. Pre-production, we have seven. When we’re shooting, we staff up to 15.
You started shooting the Tupac project this month. How do you do a documentary about him that’s different than what’s already been done?
Basically, what that is, if you watch all the documentaries on Tupac, what happens with them, they say Tupac Shakur, born in New York, got shot this day so many times and shot in Las Vegas on this day so many times. And they highlight his music. This is taking a totally different route. I was inspired by Leila Steinberg, who was his manager. At the end of her documentary, she says, here are some of the books Tupac read.
We’re pretty much going along that same path. The subtitle is, “The Education of Tupac.” We’re going to talk to his elementary school teachers. At Stanford (University), they have a program where they teach about Tupac. We’re going to be breaking down his verses bar to bar. What did he mean by this lyric? Some of the people we’ll be interviewing in the project will be speaking about his education. There will be parts of his music, but it will be a look at his psyche.
How are you going to get the documentary out to the people?
I’ll take it to film festivals, Sundance. I’d like to have it done by November. A lot of it is chasing down the talent and getting them to stand in front of the camera for an hour or so. They’re not all local, so that entails me traveling.
